Re: My first jury duty experience.
I also went through jury duty - it was a couple of years ago civil wrongful death matter.
I was chosen to sit on the jury - and get to watch the entire selection process.
And I came away with the same thoughts - those people are NOT my peers.
One person wanted to be dismissed because his grandson was graduating from kindergarten. One said that he couldn't go because last night he broke out in "whelps". When asked tons of leading questions about "are you in pain now?", do you have to go back to the doctor? He couldn't figure out which answer would get the desired result. One person said she could serve even though her grandmother had just died. The next day, she decided it was too traumatic. One idiot told folks that his father in law was an attorney. Was still seated, and then came back the next day coached on precisely what to say to get him removed.
The case was eventually ocntinued due to illness of a main witness. But I was contacted afterwards by some associates for the defense.
I told them that the plaintiff's attorney was so good, that I had to tell myself that we hadn't heard any evidence yet. And if I had to tell myself that - you can only imagine what the rest of those lunatics had already decided.
Didn't hear anything about the case ever going to trail - and I would have thought that I would based on the nature of the death (child dying of cancer, accused malpractice, etc.) so I am guessing they settled.
What an amazing process and what a frightening realization of what a sheltered life I lead.....
