On the track, I run video in the car and get lousy sound. I want to mount a remote mic but I'm not sure where would capture the best engine and possibly tire sounds without to much wind noise.
Any suggestions??? |

Anywhere the wind or air currents are minimal. Experimentation is in order but I would think that a good place to start would be under the dash. Also, you might consider using a noise canceling microphone. A decent microphone will help in terms of sound quality. A type of microphone you might consider would be one with an eletret condenser element.

I've been wondering exactly the same thing! I was thinking about finding a way to mount a mic just above the rear exhaust. What type of camera are you using? I'm using a JVC digital mini cam. Video is good but I don't have a jack for a mic. I need to get some type of sound recording device.

You might want to try a high quality mic with a spit cover on it...at least that's what we used to call them! Anyway, it's basically a good mic with that foam cover over it that used to be more popular than it is these days. I used to play in a band and when it was windy outside you would get tons of wind noise, but when you covered them with the tops it would be dead silent, except for what you wanted to hear. Of course you would probably have to duct tape the covers on at high speeds!

Ive done a ton of studio recordings. Even with a Slew of $5000 E/V mics, DA88s and Mark of the unicorn Digital editing equipment, if you want a good sound with little wind noise. Buy an Shure SM57 ($100) and some sound dampening foam. Give mic the old duct-tape-o-ramma technique with some foam and that should do the trick . . .
