Default Mopar superbird or roadrunner

How can you tell if a 1970 Superbird is not really a 1970 roadrunner clone

The car I'm looking at has RM23U0A in the vin but that just says engine size, year, and location right???
any help would be great
thanks in advance KC

it takes a lot to make one: A flush mount rear window, Chrome A pillars, 70 Coronet front fenders to accomodate the nose cone. I am sure there are some more features.

rear window is the first thing to check.

Mopar Style is a great site for those cars.

Ask away! Having a fair bit of history with the Superbird/RoadRunners I will see what I can answer for you. To get ALL the info, do contact Galen. He will be able to pull anything you need on the car as the VIN will be in his database.

According to the VIN it is so far legit:

R= Belvedere Body
M= mid range price category (meand RoadRunner)
2= 2 door
3= Hardtop
u= 440-4 BBL
0= 1970
A= Lynch Road Assy

The A is very important as ALL Superbirds were built there. They only came with engine codes U (440-4) V (440-6) and R (426 Hemi) and they were ALL 2 door Hardtops. The big issue is that by the vin you cannot tell unless you have a copy the Shipping papers (the reprint is available by the way!!).

The Superbird package is labled in Chryslers system as option code A13. Unlike other package cars, this did NOT appear on the fender tags though. If the owner has a copy of the broadcast sheet thenit will say on there as well as the original dealer windowsticker. Best is to go the site Big mentioned and look for the fender tag J code range. I doi not remember the numbers off the top of my hear but the 1920 Superbirds have J codes that are somewhat in order. Also all cars were built on Nov 30 according to Chrysler paperwork in order to meat the Nascar build date requirements! (ever see a assy plant make 1920 cars in one day!)

So why is the A13 code not on the fender tag? Because the Superbirds came down the line as regular RR's and then when they were done, they were shipped over to Creative Industries and pulled apart and modified! Modified 1970 Coronet fenders and hood replaced the RR parts. Nose was added with Charger headlight vacuume stuff, wing and trunk supports were added. Window plug was welded in and to cover the welding scars, a vinyl roof was added. Specialty glass was added to fit the new window plug. A fair bit to do all said and done!

Hope this somewhat helps!

Robert
