Default Supercharger: Roe or Paxton!!

Alrighty I am buying a viper in the Spring 100% ... Moneys there and just waiting for the right deal to come along. Now question.

Viper GTS Coupe 96-2000 what would the best setup be for future modding. What are the advantages or disadvantages on these cars?
Is gearing an issue in the earlier GENS.

Viper Convertable 2003-2006 Same questions, now I understand the newer models with the 8.3l have different piston setups, they are no longer cast, correct?

Any input will be greatly appreciated and I can't wait to be a part of the community.

Well if you end up going with the 2003-2006, your only SC option is Paxton as of right now. Sean is in the works of one for the Gen III as we speak though, so maybe by Spring you will be good to go with a Roe.

Do a search. I'll give ya the low down though..:

Roe: Usually cheaper, looks nicer, usually less problems
Limited amount of increased horsepower.

Paxton: the opposite of ^

If the new Gen III Roe uses a larger enough blower like a 3.3L Whipple it'll be a lot more fun than a centrifugal blower like a Paxton Novi. The low end power is a lot of fun to drive around with when you use a Lysholm Screw supercharger.

That said I have no direct experience with a blown Gen III yet. I have driven every type of supercharger you can put on a Ford. I'll be swapping out the Vortech J-Trim centrifugal on one of my cars for a screw type blower as soon as the kit for that car is finished.

Welcome srt4dubz...and good luck in your search for the 'right' Viper for yourself!! You will get all kinds of opinions on the Paxton vs. Roe...as stated, there is no Roe s/c for the GenIII's as of yet...there will be...and Sean will be letting me know soon. Pros and cons for both s/c's. Hope you get enough info to make your informed decision for your individual Viper when you get it!!! Be sure to become a VCA member when you get your Viper...where are you located? ~juli

That's great, Barry!!! To know how to do your own installs, guess with you being where you're located, you have no other choice! Glad you have the pics and info. Do you have a dyno near you? Would you go to have the truck dyno-ed after the s/c install if so? ~juli

Nono, i have a performancebox ( performancebox.co.uk) .. i can do it myself DIY

yes, keep it between us... don't tell further...

performancebox is a mix GPS and G-force meter.. so in the car driving you see 0-60mph, 1/4 times, G forces accelerating,braking,corners...RWHP , only need to give weight in the data... amazing box , real fun
On the circuit it counts laptimes and there's a card for input computer with all data as drivin , even graph's from circuit with track token in the corners for study ideal track and/or accelerating out off one...

Only thing more fun that driving around in a Viper is driving around in a Supercharged Viper!

If you want a supercharger save yourself some money and hassle and buy on already supercharged and sorted out.

Paxton makes the most hp, and it is linear with hp increasing with revs.
Roe makes less hp, but comes on stronger down low.

I have almost 30,000 SC miles between 2 five pound Roe cars. I have 3.45s, hi lift roller rockers, and a light flywheel on the 00. Couldn't be happier.........no issues at all. The low end grunt also works great on the track.

While the Paxton can be a DIY, there have been some horror stories on DIY GEN II Paxton installs. That was a couple years ago......Maybe those issues have been worked out. I put my Roe on and tuned it...never having ever done anyrhing like it before. You don't need a dyno to tune the car. You can do it yourself with the software and a laptop. Paxtons spool up and make their big power high up in the RPMS. I very seldom go over 5200-5500 RPM....if I can catch 1st and 2nd gear Keeps the revs off the engine. That's a good thing. Almost 75,000 miles on the car in the picture now.

that's what Sean Roe told me.... just bolt on and go !
at the same time i bought a B&B exhaust ( high flow cats and catback ) ...calverts traction bars and from Xmetal the GENIV shifter and throttle body...
Now i go even with Porches at the lights..... i want to see them in my mirror
for circuit racing i will have to work on my brakes.. after 1/2 hour they fade... truck to heavy ?

took movie when stopped with fading brakes...1 lap at Zolder .enjoy.. ( be patient , it's 90MB , takes about 2 min to download from my site... )

Very different animals. Steve's post is the clearest in terms of making a decision between the 2.

Decide on your RPM driving style, i.e., where will you most likely spend most of your time or where do you want to maximize your power.

With a Centrifugal blower (Paxton) you will be able to generate more power, however that power will be limited to the upper RPM band (say 4,000 RPM and over).

With a Roe, you will not be able to generate as much power, however you will see much more increase south of 4,000 (say 2,000 to 4,000).

Just get comfortable with your choice as you won't want to make a change afterwords.

Default Re: Supercharger: Roe or Paxton!!

Thanks a million for the info everyone, Lets put the genIII behind us for now, this isn't out of the loop buy no means but I want to narrow the question for more info. I have done quite a bit of research and honostly. The best research you can do in my mind is hearing it from people who experience it like yourselves.

Now your saying the roe doesn't have the top end grunt of the Paxton(centrifugal) setup? Makes sense since I have delt with and built turbo systems for inline 6's and 4bangers for a good part of my life into the present. This would be a close as you can get to a turbo accept ofcorse its going to be a huge linear power curve.

Alrighty now with all the grunt down low of the roe, orrrr, the inclining power or the paxton. What would you say is the best in a straight line? I ask this because I am a drag racer, crazy about it acually, but never delt with superchargers up until this project.

Thanks again
and ohh for the record I'm up in Canada, Unfortunatly only a few good months of driving up here and the rest its stored or in my case ... going to be fully built the following year ... which is another thing ... Seems the Paxton setup will be easier to get big HP out of when I get new heads and built bottom end.

Caio -- Keep the right foot planted and just smile.

I don't know which is better off the line between low end power or high end power. But Paxton definitely has more potential to give you more HP if you put the money in it.

Just from reading on these forums and Viperalley. It seems like the Roe has less problems, most likely due to Paxton's ultimately producing a lot more HP so the car itself takes more of a beating. Not speaking from experience, more so from what I've heard when I was debating between the two.
