Default 98 Camshaft?

Is the 98 cam the same as the 97 lumpy style? If so , what year did it get softer?

Thanks, Dave

Hey Dave,

my take is 97,97 and 98 identical everything, although a debate is 97 and 98 are a touch "tighter", and may crank out a few extra HP stock, as well as a bit better fit/finish issues as the plant had a year or 2 break in. Those three years respond the best to mods in general, and can pick up 50 horse with a full exhaust, not too shabby!

1999 is the quasi-cream puff, with a cam spec inbetween the 96-98 run, first year of 18" rims.

2000+ is true "creampuff" status, and responds less to exhaust mods as earlier years.

Spilting hairs in general, over 400 to the tires bone stock is hardly "puff" anything in my book, but nonetheless there is a difference.

Keep in mind the fastest recorded run by a mag tester was in a 2000 Rt/10, which puts all the creampuff status to rest quite nicely......

Then again don't listen to me, I don't own mine yet.......

Search the archives. I seem to remember somebody posting several year specs. My 98 Manual list exhaust duration at 305 lift .542, intake 297 lift .542, valve overlap 66.

Regardless of the specs my 98 and 97 idle equally as lumpy.

This is from the NHRA site. I don't think they have accurate cr numbers and therefore question how they came up with the info or if they just have some typo-s

Valves.........Cam Lift........ Gasket..........Springs

1925/1629.......458/467 ........ .039.......outer w Damper...1996

1920/1580........525/499...........054.......Outer&Inner...1997

1925/1629........458/467.........039.........Outer wDamper...1998

1925/1629........552/552.........053.........Outer&Inner....1999

1925/1629........552/552.........053.........Outer&Inner....2001

The site with the full specs is:
http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/engine/index.html#chry
they have specs for 450 and 460 hp viper motor

kind of like an old chiltons chart...........

Default Re: 98 Camshaft?

according to postings here apparently the intake/exhaust lift increased .001 inch in 98 from 97.

i compiled a list of all cam info just a little while back as this is a recurring question. see the bottom of the following:

http://www.thomasser.org/viper/

looks like these numbers kind of correlate to what marv wrote though the numbers i gleened from this site and my service manual do not match those at the nhra site exactly.

If anyone is interested in a stock cam from a '98 - mine is being pulled this weekend. Only 8,900 miles. Send me an IM or e-mail.

Would a 98 or so cam work in a 2001?
