Had air bag light come on -- 2000 GTS -- Took car to dealer and they said they had to order a clock spring. Ive never even heard of that before. Is it some part in the SRS system?? What does it do?

Clock spring connects between the steering column and to the steering wheel. it is a device used to transfer electrical impulses through the column to the wheel where conventional wire cant be used because the wheel turns about 2.5 total revolutions. it consists of a wire ribbon the is loosely wound in a container looking similar to a roll of tape. it allows the wheel to be turned over 3 revolutions without tighting up the ribbon, so they never loose the connection. these sometimes break by themselves, but usuallyis is the result of steering work where the dont line up the wheel in the center, then over turn the wheel and snap the ribbon. (generally connects to the Airbag, radio controls (if applicable) and the horn button)
