Default Need help on chroming three-spokes?

When I get my Gen. 1 in Sept., I'd like to chrome the tri-spoke wheels. I know a lot of board members recommend Cal Chrome, but is there anywhere closer to me, I am in CT. I'd rather not ship wheels across the country. Any tips?

Can the silver paint finish be taken off and can the wheel be polished?

whoever you go to, just set expectations up front. if you want a 100% perfect job, let them know.

Also, I would look into what they know about "hydrogen embrittlement". Basically, when you chrome your wheels, they get more brittle due to what's known as hydrogen embrittlement. The solution to this is to bake the wheels in an oven VERY soon after chroming, and they get backed for a set period of time at a certain temperature, which alleviates the problem.

For most show chrome parts, it's not an issue. For wheels, I would make sure they take this step. if a wheel breaks, it ain't pretty.

Ask to see samples of past work too - that will tell you how good (or not) they are.

Unless you can get show chrome locally and save on shipping, I'm going with the pro's (Cal Chrome) this winter. They said they can do my wheels (96 GTS) and centers for $150 x 4 and shipping from Indy to Cal and back UPS will add another $200. For me, its worth an extra $200 to know that I'm getting the best available vs dealing with a local shop that may or may not meet my expectations. JMHO.

Do Cal Chrome...be happy. Elsewhere...maybe not. I love mine.
