I found a nice fix for the side sills in JC whitney of all places.
I will have to post a picture of their catalog, but the fix for the dreaded side sill screws are in there. I know we have a fix for it in the do it yourself section, but this item I saw is a steel rivet with threads in it. Pretty inexpensive but looks like a permant fix. I will post pics soon.

Put a little of that lube that you use on spark plug threads on the screws that go into the Rivnuts.
You don't want the threads to get stuck and have the Rivnut turn. |

Bada Bing,
But seriously folks..... I've used rivet nuts for years. The only problem that I ever had was having the nut turn in the hole when you try to unscrew the bolt. If the rivet is expanded into thin metal or any kind of plastic, this is a real problem. If one ever turns as I said, it becomes a big problem. Now you need to drill out the turning, stainless nut. Sure, it can be done, but what a pain. And just when you are in the middle of a job, taking off some panel. |

I've been looking into a preferred way to do this mod. Having the rivet nut spin is my main concern, so I have several alternate type parts coming in to experiment with to see which is best. I've been looking for a SS version without much success.

Someone should look into aircraft type fasteners. They are expensive but the quality is excellent.
There are quite a few styles of releasable fasteners for panels. |
