Stripped lugs. Need Help!!!

Was doing my brakes today. When I started to take off the drivers side wheel I realized two of the lugs were stripped. I just had new tires put on at a local wheel shop, they must be responsible as no one else has touched them since.

Come Monday I'm really going to give these guys a piece of my mind. In the mean time I need to know how to replace these studs and nuts.

1) How hard is it to replace the studs? What has to be taken apart?
2) Where can I find replacements?
3) My lug nuts have keys. Is it possible to find two new ones that use the same key?

Unfortunately I have strip fronts and rears with changing tires numerous times because of drag racing .....Pilots to BFG's to ET Streets and Back to my Kumhos every V-10 Nationals.

The rears are easier than fronts, most on the time the lug gets stuck on stud. To get the wheel off I have to break the stud. Then take a punch and knock the stud thru the wheel assembly. Almost all auto parts carry the wheel stud, I take stud the old stud just as a precaution. Mine R/T 10 is a 01.

I have a few studs if you can't find them at a parts store.

I had some studs strip out due to cross threading. Most of these tire places or brake places use air guns and they don't hand tighten the lug nuts, they will put an impact on it and that is where the problem begins. Always Hand tighten them first to be safe.

I would take it back there with new studs and have them replace it. It's really not hard to do it on the front or the back, it requires moving of the wheel bearing hub assembly which is 4 bolts. Then you will either need to punch or press out the bad stripped out bolt and put the new one in. Make sure when they put it in they just tap the stud in the bearing assembly. Put it back together and put the wheel on, then pull the stud through with the lug nut and I would do this manually and not with an impact wrench the first time.

I knocked loose the old stud, but there is not enough space in the back to slide it out. I'm going to try taking of the four bolts behind the bearing. If this is all it takes it should be fairly simple.

The two lug nuts are ruined also. Does anyone know where i can get the lug nuts. I have a two keys for the current nuts. I don't want to have three. Is it possible to get nuts that go to the current nuts, or am I going to have to replace all 24?

I think you should be able to go Napa and get them. If you can't get two, let me know. I have two you can have.

Hammering out the broken or stripped stud can damage the wheel bearing race. It is best to use the ball joint puller that the manual recommends. Use anti-sieze on the studs next time and they won't gall as they do when dry.

I would agree..if you knock them out with a hammer, make sure you have supports on the back of the hub where the bearings won't be effected. For example, use a deep impact socket that will go around the back of the stud, that should support it.
