Default GARAGE FLOOR HELP!!!

Hello all,

When building our house I got a great deal on black and white VCT tiles (same stuff that is used in grocery stores and malls) from our builder and used it on my garage floor. It looks unbelievable when polished and clean... like a mirror... Awesome!!! Especially with my 97 GTS parked in there!!

But now for the problems...

I have to buff/polish it once a month to keep it looking good..

If its the least bit wet (kids coming out of the pool) prepare to at least complete a full 1 1/2 backflip to your doom if you miss a step.

If I let it go for a couple of months it looks like an old barn floor!!!

Does anyone know of a CLEAR "ucoat it" type topcoat I could actually mix in some sand for traction and paint over the tile?????

I have already contacted Ucoat It and they say their AF Uclear topcoat will only stick to their epoxy base coat

The tile looks great and is very easy and cheap to replace if I damage one... So I would like to NOT have to pull them up.

Suggestions?????

Sorry but no pics... I'm kinda busy blowing up things (people) in the middle east right now...

Yeah Freedom!!

Smooth surface + water = slip and fall. Fact of life some, may say Physics. I have asphalt type tile in my garage which also reacted with the tires and turned yellowish where the tires stayed in contact for long periods of time. I put B&W race deck snap tile over the asphalt tile. Cleaning is still required. Like anything get it dirty and it looks dirty.

i have a 100% epoxy floor coating done by an industrial coatings person. they mixed(spread) into the middle(of three) glass beads that give texture to the floor that is not sharp or abrasive. other i have seen used a metal type surface texturing and you could not walk or kneal on the floor in bare feet or knees. i love the way it turned out and almost 6 yrs later no issues whatsoever.

As you can tell by my name I spend some time in peoples garages. I would never put VCT in anything other than a hospital or school. A drip of water and its like a skating rink. I dont think there is a coating on the market that you can put on top of it that will acheive the results you desire.
Unfortunately for you, pulling the tile and epoxy coating it will now be expensive and difficult as for the adhesive that they use to glue down the vct has surely adhered to the concrete and possibly penetrated the concrete. Easiest solution is to lay a floating floor of garage type tile ontop of the vct. just my .02

I did the same floor, and I use a carpet runner for the high trafic area, however
I was told that there was a nonslip sealer/wax for that floor, I haven't used it yet.

As a "Low budget" solution, you might try some clear skate-board grip tape, cut into small circles placed in walking areas. When it starts to get dingy, just pull it up and replace it. The stuff is practically indestructable, it's inconspicuous, and it's not permanent. Hope that's not too cheesy.

I second Zen's idea of putting something on top of your tile.
I have "Race Deck" Circle trak tile in my garage, it does need to be cleaned more than I like (the white tiles) but is ok to walk on with wet feet. I have a pool next to the garage...

Cheers,

Thanks to all for the suggestions...

But honestly my wife and I are talking about building again so this time I am going to have them stain and seal the actual concrete..

Anyone have this process done yet???

USAF Viper,
Check out the pictures of "Garage Floor...", in my photo gallery. I have had this floor for 4 years now and it serves well. Available from Sam's Club, as well as other places.

If you bought Motormat or Racedeck, you could take the floor with you when you move.

Thank you Dr. ... Definatley thinking of doing a race deck on the next dwelling... but looking into concrete stain as well.

Hey Mark... sorry to ruin your day...

Of course I didn't post this in the "general" thread...

With the total of like 300 posts there I figured all the smart/cool people were in here... well most anyway..

Looks like you did the same thing back on 01/09/06 about 5 times... looks like we are even.

And the mods are great... still waitin on an avitar after 2 weeks.

Thanks for the help everyone!
