I screwed up last night and hit 2nd instead of 4th at WOT
so I want to get everything checked out. I'm having a leakdown and compression test done tomorrow. I'm not sure if I hit the rev limiter or not. The car still pulled hard and went into all the gears fine, plus the rearend wasn't making any wierd noises, but I still want to get it checked out to be sure. The guy doing it isn't a Viper tech, but has done lots of work for me in the past and is a real good technician. Is there anything special I need to tell him to do? I know you pull the fuel pump relay and do the compression test at WOT, but are there any other special instructions? |

according to a well known tuner i talked to a number of months ago, tell your tech to set aside 6 - 8 hours aside to do the job. NOT. |

Ouch. I did the same thing about 8 months ago. Did not hit the rev limiter since I got out of it so fast (really gets the car pointed in a new direction FAST). Did hear a loud BANG from underneath so I was sure I broke something loose. Took it real easy home...but nothing appeared broken. Drove it easy for a few times and gradually worked up the courage for some WOT runs. Nothing ever appeared that would indicate any breakage. Had Larry Macedo check out trans mount, engine mounts, rear end, etc...but nothing was broke. Fine Dyno run too. Near as I can tell, the trans case by the shifter is really close to the tunnel and under severe torque, the mount flexes enough to make contact. Did some hard launches and can make the trans bang against the tunnel, especially if I get some wheel hop. Anyways, I wouldn't go to extreme measures technically or financially unless you definately suspect some damage. These things are some pretty tough reptiles.

If anything, you probably would have bent a push rod. Time to upgrade to roller rockers and replace them. |

If you floated (and bent) a valve enough to contact a piston then the leak down test should show it. I would guess that you would already know it by now though.

I just got off the phone with the tech and he said the compression ratings ranged from 132-155. He said he didnt do the leakdown test because it was an expensize test and he thought it would be a waste of my money. All motor and tranny mounts are fine. 64k on the car, all stock motor. When I pick the car up after work, I'll be able to see the sheet with the exact results for each cylinder. What do you guys think? 132 seems mighty low to me.

expesnive test? takes about as long as a std compression test. You cant tell anything from those readings. If you are not getting blow by and pressurizing the cooling system then everything is probably ok anyway.

leak down is the way to go...compression test..may not always be accurate depending on how it's done. Like the post said above...I am sure you are fine. Rev limiter is there to shut down the engine if you over rev.
