Anyone ever use one of these contraption to pull an engine?

I think it will do the job!

I should be able to pull just about anything out with this.

I had this Gantry Crane Made and have a 3 ton Hoist for it also.

I need to sand blast it and paint it. Then it will look
pretty!

I will also be using this to pull the Lambo engine out. If you
need the clearance..this baby will do it. Cost me about $500

Yes, 15+ years ago.

If the castors were fixed to only go forward and back, that'd be better, you already have side to side on the I-beam. Otherwise, when you're kicking the hoist to line up shaft / bellhousing dowels, if the hoist moves side to side it may be a pain, worry about hitting the car sides too. I don't care for chainfalls, the chain drops all over the motor and car when you're pulling at it, may chip up this and that.

I prefer lifting the car up on stands, removing the tires, and using a conventional hydraulic cherry picker. It's easy to kick the picker around to wiggle in the motor into position, definitely easier when it is a one man operation.

Hmm..The casters lock into place and for me pulling height
wise on the cherry picker wouldn't work too well on the Lambo. Cherry picker doesn't go high enough. I need to remove the entire engine and tranny out at the same time and have to be completely above the car.

Have you had any issues with this type of crane? Not too worried
about hitting any other cars. None around

That's good about the castors. I'd still like to have one of those I-beam hoists handy, good for dumping an engine into a truck bed, etc.. or lifting a car chassis and doing the reverse by installing the motor from underneath, dropping the car onto the motor w/o a hoist. There are cherry pickers for lifting engines out of trucks w/a higher lift than your normal car style cherry picker. Done that in the past servicing a very heavy diesel out of a lifted 4x4. For $500, that's a good deal & for the steel.

Whre did you find these heavy duty cherry pickers with higher lifting specs?

I see the 8 ton ones, but fully extended, it can only do 1000lbs. My engine and tranny together is close to 2000lbs.

Most of us are familiar of the typical red $300 - $500 hobby cherry pickers. I had to rent a commercial grade one for the diesel 4x4, the floor cranes get expensive. For example, check out this one -

Noticed the NOS bottle that makes the lift go FASTER. Don't forget to remove the hood.

I am going to use it to pull Viper engines out and my Lambo engine out also.
I have a few things I am going to do on the lambo...the more I figure this car
out the less it scares me like the Viper.

Dang those cherry pickets are expensive...Whew! I think I will stick with my crane.

Be aware that on many Ferraris (and probably Lamborghinis), you remove a subframe from the car from underneath to remove the engine. The engine and transmission come out with the rear wheels still attached and you can even attach small "front" wheels and roll the entire assembly around out of the car. This was years ago and modern Italians may be different but it was a really neat design before; I'd hope they'd keep it.

You may get into a situation where the engine physically won't fit out the top of a Lambo without removing body panels, etc.
