Yes, the Canadian govt will tax the car on its commercial value, whether it is new or 2nd hand.
One more thing, it is easier to import a Canadian car in the US that to import a US car in Canada. Canadian authorities may authorize the import of certain cars only if they were built for the Canadian market (Maple leaf sticker on the door). Check before you buy. Good luck. |

Jeremy, I am from BC and ended up buying my Viper in Calgary because I found the one I wanted there and didn't want to discover the hassles of importing personally. I know people that have moved from Canada to the US and said that it was quite a pain to convert the vehicles to pass the inspection, instruments from kph to mph, differing exhaust laws, etc.
My mother's car is a US car and she lives in Canada and had no problems but she bought it from someone who did the importing. He said there was no problem with it though, very simple process. A US made car should be free of duty taxes due to the free-trade agreement and you won't have to pay any provincial tax since you are in Alberta. I had to pay provincial BC tax when I brought the Alberta car here. So I guess what I'm saying is, although it shouldn't be a problem to import one, wouldn't you rather have the local dealer support because you bought it from them? With the current exchange rate I think you actually get a bit of a deal buying in Canada too because the Canadian sticker price doesn't take into account the recent CDN$ slide. |

Here is an interesting web site of Transport Canada:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/impor...sh/Imind_e.htm It shows that Viper roadsters built for the USA market from 1992 to 1996 are in-admissible for Canadian import.... Just for info... |

(LOL) My great Viper brothers to the north, I implore you, revolt now. Leave your homeland and come to MONTANA! Perhaps we all can part from our nation's tax bondage and form a new independent Viper nation with out Federal taxation! Anarchy you say? Heck we don't even have a state sales tax here. You can buy a real gallon of gas here vs a liter, and probably for the same price. We already know how to play hockey and have lots of guns for your recreational enjoyment.(No licence required!) Conveniently located just south of the border, in Montana we offer fun and games (aka - legal gambling) and no RCMP! You can own a radar detector. Drink any booze from 8am to 2am seven days a week in any bar and we even offer full size 12oz cans of soda in our pop machines eah! Best of all, there's no French spoken here! Cheers. (JD)
DISCLAIMER: Canadian folks are always welcome here. *Some restrictions may apply. Guided Montana "Freeman" & uni-bomber tours extra. Not available to some Eastern CDN Provincial cities. Void where prohibited by your law. |

(LOL again) Dangerous? Nah. We are rid of the Uni-bomber and Freeman. Besides, most of them weren't even from here! We are really a gentle bunch, and play hockey only for fun. Use to race with the Lethbridge Alberta crowd. The racing was great, but the party after was enough to scare me. Tried to out party this really big guy from Newfoundland. Can't be done!! Soon after I quit drinking. Talk about a real pain, try dragging a race car back & forth across the border for the weekend. Seriously though, I feel for you guys having to pay such a premium on U.S. vehicles. I know the U.S./CDN exchange rate sucks, but if your ever down Great Falls way, we have a very good certified Viper Tech at the local Dodge dealer! His name is John Campbell. The shop phone is (406)452-5337. (JD)

Sorry Jeremy, Montana reinstated their day time speed limit last spring. 75MPH Highway 70MPH Secondary roads except where posted differently. The highway Patrol uses "instant-on" type Ka radar. The fines are $$$$$$$ and you can add extra for the currency exchange! The open speed limit was fun while it lasted. Frankly the greatest abusers of the Montana "reasonable & prudent" law were out of state drivers. Locals usually kept it under 90MPH. I use to see Alberta cars on I-15 cruising at 120+ on a regular basis. The cops complained that it was to difficult to prosecute offenders because the "reasonable & prudent" speed law was to vague. Most drivers who were stopped ether got a $5 ticket for wasting natural resources (a 1980's law that was a joke) or at the other end of the spectrum, were issued a reckless driving ticket! Good luck with your purchase of a new Viper. Jim Davis
