Hey i know i'm in the other camp but i wanted to ask a question..Last month near Toronto, i had the chance to line up with a 98 or 99 GTS...We where on the 407 where there is room to play..There was very little traffic, and we slowed down to about 20 MPH...We stayed with each other to about 120 and both backed off, waved and that was it..I thought the Z would stay with the Viper to around 80 or 90 , then the cubes would pull away from me..I'm not looking to get flamed, just asking a question..Should it have been that close? I do have headers and a good intake....

Take a look in your newstand for GM High Tech Performance Magazine. There's a super article in their about this exact subject. Bottom line, with a professional driver, and an incredible 1/4 mile time of 12.48 for the Z06, a stock Viper still dominated with a ground spinning 11.9.
Sounds like you've done some great engine mods, combined with the possibility that the Viper driver might have picked the wrong gear to chase 'ya. |

dbvetteZO6:
Welcome! You'll find that many of us Viper owners respect the C5 and especially the ZO6. Car and Driver had a 3-way shootout scheduled between the ZO6, Viper ACR, and 911 Turbo, but the Viper had some problems making it to the track. Left with only the ZO6 and the 911 turbo, the 405 HP Vette took the prize against the AWD and $100K+ Porsche in nearly every category; beating the German supercar in acceleration and handling. The Viper vs. ZO6 competition is an open debate, but not lacking for strong opinions. The consensus appears to have it that the Viper will pull on the ZO6 at higher speeds, but the ZO6 has an edge in "touring" or road course situations where lateral grip makes a big difference. In a race to 120 MPH, I would think that the two cars would be very closely matched. Post a picture of your car if you have one handy - I'm trying to talk my wife into a ZO6 as a daily driver. |

Laura: I can assure you both vehicles where shifted hard
Scott: I read that article also and was very pleasently surprised..I came from the old school 'no substitute for cubes' having had a hemi challanger, 440 6pack charger and other toys, i was sure the viper would pull me at 90-100...The headers are maybe good for 15-18hp the intake maybe 10... |

No. Vettes cannot beat Vipers with comparable drivers. I was on Moroso's road course last weekend with at least four Z06s. They never came close. If Alan Modzelewski 98 GTS would have been there he would have lapped them!
Later that evening I raced a black ZO6 in my RT/10 on Gandy International Dragstrip. Beat him both times. They're good, but they're not good enough. |

The viper was probably down on power due to canada/us exchange!. Seriously, Z06's are fast but a gts should have pulled above 80. Are you considering getting a Viper? if so join the ontario VCA, we need some more members. I'm 1 hour from the GTA normally but I'm currently in school 3 hours away in ottawa. Do you still have those Mopars?

I drive an 02 Z06 every day. I can tell you that this car is quick. If I were going to drive each of the cars down the 1/4 mile thus having the same driver input, I would think that my 98 GTS would pull on the Z but that is SOTP. The more I drive the Z the more I love it. I like each of the cars for individual characteristics. I couldn't stand the Z06 versus Viper thing so I had to find out myself. Given the same drivers, the Viper is quicker in a straight line. Put a slightly better driver in the Z06 and it might just edge out the Viper. I am thinking of building a "owner experience" comparison web site just for the heck of it but have been to lazy.
Scott, Here is a pic for you. I know you and your wife would love to have a Z for an every day driver. ![]() BTW, there is at least one other person on this board that has both. He posts on the vette board also. |

The 2002 ZO6 is a awesome car,405 HP,excellent straight line performance and handling in a nice everyday driver, and you can't beat the price.
You could almost buy 2 ZO6's for the price of a 2002 Viper. |

2 Z06's for the price of one Viper?
I have to defend our Vipers: C'mon now! Z06 = $50K! (very rarely discounted) Viper = $76K! (Always Huge Discounts) Net difference probably closer to 20K! or less What do you get for the 20K? 1) 50+ HP! 2) Gobs of torque 3) Exclusivity 4) V10 5) Out of the crate, track ready! 6) An incredible Nation of friendships! 7) Much higher resale value 8) Opportunity to get a 500+HP '03 before all the rest!!!!! 9) 7 year/100,000 mile drivetrain warranty (for the next 2 months) 10) Lots of great debates with Z06 owners ...need I go on? |

or 7 Daewoos.
or 1,400,000 mins worth of 1-800-collect calls are we arguing price or speed. It seems it always turns from which car is faster to which is faster for the $$$. ![]() |

Thanks for the input guys and gal...I have always liked the Viper and don't go with the 'Clownshoe' crap..Both great supercars in my opinion, and if i could afford both, they would be in my garage..I was surprised though, by the fact there is not as much difference on the road between the two, as you would think on paper taking all the #s into perspective..Doing a head and cam package soon, looking for 410-420 RWHP. Should be fun!!!

I don't quite see the resemblance and think it is a very childish comment. I think it stems from the very immature and jealous. It just makes some feel better to use that idiotic term. |
