Default Need computer help

To make a long story short, I needed a new hard drive and I got one from my friend. Installed it, the OS (windows 98), and all the drivers and software. It worked fine for a few weeks but now after I start up and am using the computer I get a blue screen "error writing to drive C" or something to that effect. The blue screen comes up sometiomes minutes after start up and sometimes an hour or so. After resetting the computer doesnt recognize (primary=none) the hard drive but letting it sit for 5 mins or so and then restarting the thing starts up with no problems until the blue screen eventually shows again. Any ideas???

If the HD was recently replaced like you said, it sounds as though the HD controller is dying, or BIOS is corrupt.

If your BIOS is battery backed, pull the plug to reset.

If it's the HD controller, and it's built into the motherboard, you'll need to replace the motherboard. Otherwise, replace the controller card.

Allen,

I would try replacing the internal battery.

(I take it you don't like USC )

Allen,

Where are you in Southern California? If you are close by, I can take a look at it.

Thanks guys, the controller is on the mother board.

Ulysses, Its mostly a joke but I'm not a huge fan of SC, I actually went there for one day, after I had graduated from UCLA, and withdrew. I had come up with the name way back when UCLA football was in the middle of that long winning streak, old history nowadays.

Larry, I am near Pasadena.

Sorry I would email everyone but my comp is flaky and posting here is just easier under these circumstances.

controllers very rarely go bad. most likely your new hard drive is failing after the initial burn-in period. it happens very often especially with the new high-rpm drives.

just imo

Everyone thinks they are a computer whiz

To work around this issue, disable IRQ steering. To do so, follow these steps:

1: Restart your computer. Press and hold down the CTRL key until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then choose Safe Mode.
2: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3: Double-click System, click the Device Manager tab, and then double- click the System Devices branch to expand it.
4: Click PCI Bus, and then click Properties.
5: Click the IRQ Steering tab.
6: Click the Use IRQ Steering check box to clear it.
7: Click OK, and then click Yes to restart the computer when you are prompted.

Good Luck!
