Part of my lot in the last 10 years is to suffer from periodic back pain, and I've figured a bunch of tricks that help.
Some of it may sound weird, but I swear it helps. There are various part of the back hurting for various people, so if you've got tricks, please say what part of the back was hurting. (Yup, I know some of you will drag this in the sewer with the lower part of the lower back... heh.) Tailbone level back pain. - Placing a pillow under the mattress to invert from concave to convex. This helps stretch the front thigh muscles and open the leg-hip-waist angle as you sleep. That angle is messed up by years of sitting and the front thigh muscle shortening. - work standing up if you can. I put my keyboard on a recycle box and my monitor on another box. Looks weird but I don't care. - sit on a ball at work. Instead of a static chair position, this helps become more nimble and stretch. - various leg stretches. The yoga "pinch" pose is a good strech for the back of the thighs, and for the front thighs, the "cobra" pose is great. - stay away from the stairs. They tend to strengthen the leg muscles unevenly, and it you don't strech after climbing them, baboom! - run or jog. Try to stand up straight as much as possible. - hump the ceiling. Lay flat on your back, then bend your knees, bringing your feet toward your butt, but keep the feet on the ground. Raise your butt upward by pushing on your shoulders and your feet. Repeat 50 times, every day. - drink water, get some vitamin C, and cut down on meat for a while to improve your flexibility. - plant some hand stands against a wall. I've always done these since young so maybe it's just good for me. If you're not too limber or strong, go easy, I don't want you to crater and smash your head on the marble tiles! This helped me for carpal tunnel too. Some major critical concept: if you are injured or had back surgery, rest or go very easy. Exercise can mess you up more! If you are not injured but stiff, then do some long sessions of stretching every day. Like 45 minutes. Read a book doing the cobra. Then switch to the pinch and keep reading. For a while things hurt so bad I could not/would not dare doing any abs or back exercise (the supermans). Now things feel good and I can do more core strengthening and pushups. |

You will need more than just "chondroitin"!!!!
You will need Chondroitin, Glucosamine, and at least a good multi-mineral product. MSM and a good multi - Trace Mineral product as well. I'm in the Vitamin/Mineral Dietary Supplement Industry and have been for over 10 years. YES THIS STUFF WORKS!!!! Best wishes 2Charmed |

Remster "the Rhino" does not take pain killer, ever. If something hurts, I want to figure out why, and I want to stop doing whatever hurts. There's a reason why pain occur. Maybe if I get diagnosed with something terminal, I may take something, but they first have to diagnose me and I am not going near a doctor when they wear their white coats ![]() I remembered seeing on TV something about kids who don't feel pain... and it's rather bad because they bump into stuff and burn themselves without realizing that they mess themselves up. Pain is a natural phenomenon, a part of life. It is unavoidable. Pain serves the purpose of conveying a danger message from the nerves, a message that physical damage to the body is imminent. "Run! Remove yourself from peril!" The instinctual reaction is to escape the source of pain, to flee from it. I take Glucosamine / Chondroitin complex twice a day as recommended. Don't skimp on the quality. The good stuff will have 750 mg of glucosamine and 600mg of Chondroitin and will cost you $20 to $30 for a 60 day supply.
Brunton I told you about this when we were at Panoz school. I have shoulder and knee problems and this stuff keeps me off the Vioxx and percoset. Another good over the counter remedy is Percogesic. It is a pain reliever designed especially for the back. Stretches are good. I used to have my back go out about twice a year. Lower back, felt like a rubber band broke when it went and seemed to go out from rather innocuous moves; nothing out of the ordinary, sometimes just sitting in a chair and all of a sudden I would go down. I could barely walk for several days. With stretching (and I lost 35 pounds) and the G /C complex I rarely if ever have a problem and my knee and shoulder are great. One other thing... A doctor friend of mine is a pain specialist; when someone asks his specialty he says with an evil grin "I specialize in pain" like Dr. Mengele. Anyway he showed me how when your lower back goes out you can lay on a table or a bed and a friend or spouse can yank on your leg (here come the snide comments) and pop your back into alignment. before I started taking the G / C complex and exercising I would have my wife do that and instead of being down for days it was better in a few hours. Hope this long diatribe helps. ![]() |

Also, there is an ointment called "Super Blue Stuff" that really is great. You used to only be able to get it on the net but now it is in some drug stores.

There is something "new" out called Sam-E... it's on the internet.
A simple Posture Rule: Try to be as tall as you can be. That one really stretches your back out. Also, walk w/o stomping. |
