Went to Conn's Appliance here in Houston 2 weeks ago (big appliance chain here). Saw a nice headboard for the guest bedroom with a price tag of $120 on it.
Went back a week later to get that headboard and decided to get a new cooktop at the same time. Got the sales rep and went to the cooktop and said, "1 of these please." He took the price tag to note the item. Went to the headboard and said the same. He took that tag too and rang it up. Paid the bill plus the additional shipping. Next day, shipment arrives and it's the wrong headboard. A totally lame looking one was sent. Called Conn's and my rep wasn't there. Another rep said to come in and show which one it was I wanted and they would fix it. He said the one I wanted may have been mis-labeled since they did ship what was entered in the original order. Went to Conn's later that day and my rep knew already about the problem. Took in a digital camera with the photo of the wrong one and said this is the right one. He agreed and asked me to bring in the wrong one and he would give me the right one. I also notice at this time, the right one now has a tag of $260 on it! Told the rep, no dice on bringing it back. Have a Viper and G35C and no way is a headboard going to fit. He said they will come out and swap them. Next day the rep calls and says he is coming over personally to do the swap. And he did. All smiles and goodbye. Few days later, I get a call from the rep and he says they want the difference in the $120 and the $260. I tell him that sounds like bull. I wouldn't have come back if it was $260 for the headboard in the first place. Someone made a mistake and it wasn't me. What do you guys think? |

You made a purchase on an item labelled $120, weather it is labelled wrong or not is moot, the price on the item is the price you pay, tough for them. Personally I'd go tell him to fly a kite and if he gets impossible just ask to talk to the manager and explain your dissatisfaction and inconvenience due to the mix-up. I don't think they're going to p1ss you off for $120 after they delivered the wrong one in the first place.

Clearly you did nothing wrong. You shouldn't have to pay the difference after it has been rung up.

They don't want to assume the responsability, their problem. Next time they better check their tags better.

Hey Doc:
I'd tell em tough luck. If the tag was attached to the headboard you bought, that's pretty shady. |

Yep..it's their problem..not yours. Don't even give it a second thought.

It's a miracle you're on the winning end of this. Most of the time the customer gets the shaft. Take what you got and run. *grin* No looking back.

I work in retail advertising now, and I can tell you that MOST of my day is spent ensuring ALL of my advertisiments are ACCURATE. Most retail locations will TRY to get the difference (as most of us would in their shoes), but in the end, it comes down to paying the advertised price. Stick to your guns! It is just a dance. They figure that it doesn't hurt to try, and odds are that a certain percentage of people pay the difference (sadly). They have nothing to lose.......except repeat/referral business.

Thanks for all the replies. They really help.
Any lawyers know for sure that there is nothing legal they can do to me? Thanks again -- this board always rocks! |
