The 460lbs Michael Trammel pleaded guilty on the 3rd day of deliberation and got 23 years.
What an education, and here what I took from it. Never use a public defender if your azz in on the line. The two lady's acting like prosecuting for the state was a hobby, while the defense attorney was there to win. This guy could of easily gotten off had something gone wrong. [******] I ask you all, if called for jury duty do it and have your values known. Too many people prided themselves for getting out of it. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/loc...rammell03mar03,0,4910921.story?coll=sfla-news-palm |

The lawyers screwed up. You're too intelligent to be on a jury.
When I got called I was completely honest and called our justice system a "pathetic joke." The prosecutor asked me how I felt about lawyers and I told them I thought they were "scum." Following that reply the judge brought a laugh by saying, "Don't ask him what he thinks about judges." They ended up continuing to grill me for half a day and finally let me go. |

After being convicted of several petty crimes that I didn't commit and experiencing first hand the lenghts cops go to win, there is no way I could ever hand down a guilty verdict on anyone, regardless of crime. I'd be okay with letting a murder walk free then accidently putting the wrong man away for a year.
Thats just me. |

I had jury duty last month, and also wanted to be chosen. I was, and it was a very educational experience. DUI case though...

I had jury duty a few years ago. Took a entire week and was never chosen for any jury because I was a legal aide for an attorney's office at the time. They couldve dismissed me Monday, but instead I was stuck at the courthouse for 6-8 hours a day in the jury room until Thursday when they ran out of cases they needed jurors for

I was called about 5 months ago for jury duty, got picked for a case in the first go-around. After a full day of testimony, it came time for us to deliberate the case. I was picked as the jury foreman by the group. The worst part about the whole experience was not the attorneys, but the actual jury themselves. It was unbelievable the lack of intelligence and stupidity that I witnessed in that jury room.........absolutely no common sense. I would be terrified to have to go to a trial by jury after this experience.

A room full of people with no valid reasons that would get them out of jury duty? Those aren't my peers ...

Yes, I've often thought about it that way. It would seem to me that just ordering people to serve, no questions, no excuses no hardship, just do it. That would get an actual cross section of a community to serve on a jury. |

I think someone here once posted about the idea of professional juries - intelligent, qualified people whose sole purpose is to decide cases. It would have its downsides, but the single upside is no fools in the booth.

I also went through jury duty - it was a couple of years ago civil wrongful death matter.
I was chosen to sit on the jury - and get to watch the entire selection process. And I came away with the same thoughts - those people are NOT my peers. One person wanted to be dismissed because his grandson was graduating from kindergarten. One said that he couldn't go because last night he broke out in "whelps". When asked tons of leading questions about "are you in pain now?", do you have to go back to the doctor? He couldn't figure out which answer would get the desired result. One person said she could serve even though her grandmother had just died. The next day, she decided it was too traumatic. One idiot told folks that his father in law was an attorney. Was still seated, and then came back the next day coached on precisely what to say to get him removed. The case was eventually ocntinued due to illness of a main witness. But I was contacted afterwards by some associates for the defense. I told them that the plaintiff's attorney was so good, that I had to tell myself that we hadn't heard any evidence yet. And if I had to tell myself that - you can only imagine what the rest of those lunatics had already decided. Didn't hear anything about the case ever going to trail - and I would have thought that I would based on the nature of the death (child dying of cancer, accused malpractice, etc.) so I am guessing they settled. What an amazing process and what a frightening realization of what a sheltered life I lead..... |

In remembering this, I don't think the pick 'em and force 'em method would result in much better jurors. Still might be good though, it would expedite the process. |

Personally, I would prefer to have someone listen to the facts, not be a supposed "professional" who may have "heard it all before". That is dangerous, very dangerous. Oh, and all lawyers are not "scum". Some actually help their clients out with very difficult situations to obtain a positive advantage, without hurting others. Lawyers also have to sit for jury duty as well, just like everyone else.

We found out later on the the guy had struggle to unconsciousness, two other girls prior, and raped them. But we were never going to get to hear this. I had a few Liberals thinking juror's on this trial, that were trying to find ways to feel sorry for this A hole. I had to tell them that 4, 30 something people, don’t end up living in a weekly rate motel, and turning tricks on the street, because of a few bad breaks in life. These people had to work very hard at under achieving, in America. |
