IMO, the kid is dead. I know legally he's not, but thats sure not "living" to me. I never want to be that way. My family knows to pull the plug

That is a sad video. I can not believe he is still alive. It is amazing what the human body can sustain. I am with Chad and would not want to continue at that point. My heart goes out to him.

As sad as it is... he has some responsibility in this too, unless that was the very first time he got in the car with Nick, which I doubt. Most likely he loved the street racing, and that's a risk he took naively. Sure he deserves the money he's going to sue for, but he's not completely innocent here either.

IIRC, he didn't have his seatbelt on either, which was probably a contributing factor. Doesn't alter the ultimate blame, but nonetheless a factor.

I made a point to not state blame in my comment. Only to say that it is sad and what the human body can do. I agree that he stepped into the car and he knew what type of driver nick was. Still is sad that this all had to happen.

...especially to one of our guys just back from Iraq. Sad that in youth you think you're invincible. Most of us are just lucky something tragic like that didn't happen to us when we were young.

Hulk might be a great guy but he is an idiot for giving his kid 700hp cars, particularly considering the record the kid had. Absolute moron. My dad wouldn't even let me own a V8. My dad is a very smart man.

The big push for seatbelt safety came in the 90s. How does anyone not wear a seatbelt these days? The leading cause of death amongst the 15-24 age group is traffic accidents. Nothing else even comes close. Not cancer, not AIDS, not drug abuse, nothing. WTH are parents and public education teaching kids anyway?

Jeeze, I've been wearing a seatbelt since the 70s. Admittedly, as a kid I only wore it because it made me feel like a racecar driver but over the years it turned into a natural feeling to be strapped in.

What's worse is that when that young man was in the military, he was taught over and over about wearing seatbelts and about driving under the influence. They're some of the leading causes of off-duty deaths in the military. The military spends A LOT of time and money educating it's Sailors and Soldiers on this.

Now what if Nick wasn't racing and wasn't drunk, he hydroplaned and the same outcome happened? Would people blame Nick for not driving safer, or having better tires? People may start asking why the passenger wasn't wearing his seatbelt and if he was then his injuries may not have occured or may not have been as severe. The passenger DOES share some of the blame for his situation...not wearing a seatbelt (aren't seatbelts required in CA?) and for getting into a car with a driver who was drinking (especially someone who he knows races alot).

On another note, maybe the family thinks/prays technology in years to come may help him recover at least enough where he could be somewhat independent? Love of your children has a profound effect on what you'd do for them. It's most unfortunate and my heart goes out to his family.

At the risk of sounding a bit callous, I have a few thoughts on the "pulling the plug" thing. From the looks of it, he is missing the frontal lobe of his brain, which a person is fully capable of biologically living without. This area controls consciousness and other higher-level activities like personality that most of us consider essential to "living". As long as the brain stem is intact, his heart will keep beating and his lungs will continue absorbing air. "Pulling the plug" would amount to removing a feeding (well, water) tube. I'd imagine that it would be tough to do that even to someone in a vegetative state as it would take a week or more for them to die, and it seriously wouldn't be pretty. I think this crosses the line between letting someone die and killing them for most people. The issue was the same with Terry Schiavo, IIRC.

Yep. I remember that from my Air Force days. I was wondering of the Marines did the same.

I say Nick needs to serve time and on probation their after. and while on probation he needs to serve community service to the family of the injured friend by spend so many hours a day feeding, changing etc to the injured friend so the family members could have to time away for them selves. he needs to lie in the bed he made

What I don't get is that when he was brought in following the accident, wouldn't the doctors explain that the outcome would be nothing more than a vegetative state, at best? Wouldn't his parents have to authorize such drastic measures in an attempt to keep him alive?

I can't imagine their anguish, but what would be the point of having their son survive at that point, instead of letting him go and remembering him as he was, rather than ending up like this?

A horrific outcome for everyone involved, including N. Hogan.
