Default Group Buy On SCT Handheld Flash Programmers

Hi Everyone,

Is there interest in a group buy discount price on the SCT calibrators?
We can program them for all models and years from 1996 through 2006 (RT/10, GTS, SRT-10, Ram SRT-10 and Ram Hemi).

With a group volume, I can get a better price from SCT and pass a 15% savings onto everyone. That puts the box, with three programs we put in based on your car and mods, at $509.

For those that may be unaware what the hand held flash device is, how it operates or what it does, the box plugs into your OBD2 diagnostic port under your dash. Once plugged in, you follow a series of prompts to save your stock program from the PCM and then load in the program of your choice. We have tunes for 91, 93 and higher octane. The programs optimize the air / fuel ratio and spark advance, giving you quite a bit more power and throttle response. The gains depend on the year and mods, but they're always noticeable. In addition to optimizing the tune of the engine, we can also turn off the downstream cat sensors (so you can run catless without a check engine light), activate the fan earlier, change the rev limiter, turn off the wide open throttle timer, turn off the torque management on the automatic Rams, etc, etc. All are very beneficial improvements in their own right.

We can make the group buy happen if we get at least 25 orders. If you guys are up for it, post on this thread to ask questions or just put your name down and we'll start a list. If we get enough people, we'll set up the actual order process. This thread will basically be for seeing how many are in so we can see what price we can get down to. If we get 30+, we will be able to drop to $500, which is SCT's minimum price.

If you guys want to do it, lets give it a try for two weeks, until the 25th of this month.

Here's an email from an owner after a simple fuel and spark tune on his stock 2001 RT/10:

.................................................. ...............................
Back when you guys tuned my Viper, I was rather short-sightedly focused on the peak numbers. Everybody does that, I guess, and I even know better, but I did it anyway. The peaks were a little better than the VEC1 was able to give me (no VEC or tune 382HP/433TQ, VEC1 410HP/456TQ, SCT tune 437HP/480TQ), but the car FEELS so much better that I knew something else was going on. I thought maybe it was the rock-solid A/F mix, because I knew it wandered all over the place on my older runs.

Today I ran across my old dyno sheets, so I pulled out the one from the tuning run for comparison.

Both graphs start at 2000 RPM.

With the VEC1 I was making about 325 @ 2000, I peaked at 456 around 3600, had that characteristic dip, peaked again around 4400 and held until about 5000, then dropped off.

The SCT tune is totally different. At 2000 RPM it *starts* at 400 TQ and holds steady until about 2700, which is amazing in itself. Then it climbs steadily into the 480 TQ range at about 3700 and stays there until about 4400, where it starts to slowly drop off. The characteristic dip is totally gone, too.

I wish I could justify the expense of taking this thing to Sebring for a weekend. With it cranking out that much torque that low and that steadily over the whole RPM range, I would bet I'd see a huge difference. I do see a big difference just driving it around town. (And much to the dismay of my tire budget, it's easier than ever to slide that ass-end around... somewhere between 325 TQ and 400 TQ down around 2000 RPM must be the sweet spot for breaking loose a pair of 13" wide tires.)

I dunno, you guys probably have done similar comparisons already, but I found it interesting, and I figured I'd mention it just in case you hadn't looked at it this way yet.

How exactly do your mail order tunes work? Can we go to the dyno after we installed your tunes, do a few pulls, then send you the info and you adjust it for free?

If the tool allows me to program other people's cars for them, then I'm in. Is it one programmer per computer or can i tune multiple cars w/ it?

Thanks!

We start by getting all the information you can provide us about your car. Then we program according to your mods (these are not canned programs supplied by SCT). Because engines and fuel quality vary, we load three programs into the tuner; Low Octane Performance, Mid Octane Performance and High Octane Performance. Start by using the one that corresponds to the fuel octane you're using (a description of each program is supplied with the box). If it pings, you step down a program. If it doesn't and you want to add more timing for say race fuel or octane booster, you can step up a program.

If none of these programs is ideally suited for your engine, for whatever reason, you let us know what it's doing that isn't right for you and we send you new programs by email so you can change the programs in the box. Email and a USB cable is all that's needed (along with your box serial number and all the info you can provide of course). No additional charge applies.

Hi JD,

When you go to put a new tune in a PCM, the first thing the SCT does is download the stock tune from the PCM and VIN lock to that PCM. Then you load in the desired tune. It can only hold one stock downloaded tune. To use on a second vehicle, you have to put the first vehicle back to stock, taking the stock tune out of the memory location in the box, which unlocks the box VIN. You get three uses on different vehicles following that procedure. After that, the box would have to go back to SCT to get reset.

The upside to this is that if you tune a vehicle, you don't have to buy a new SCT for the next car you have and can also sell the box if ever desired. Basically, you'd just put the stock tune back in it, then use the SCT for the next vehicle. If the year or model was different, we could email the appropriate tunes. The downside, you can't tune multiple vehicles at the same time.

The tunes cannot be modified by the user and there are no adjustment parameters that you can make with the box, which is why it's important to get the information about the vehicles and any current mods. We can load in a tune for planned mods though, such as headers, using one of the three slots available.

Regards,
Sean

Sean: We're into 480's rwhp right now with the VECII...does this SCT override the VECII? OR does it INCLUDE the VECII's tune? Curious how it works with the VEC....would we GAIN much more than we already have or not? That's Mike's question for ya! THX~~~juli

Sean:
A few questions before I commit.

Can you turn off the skip shift with the tuner?

Can you make the fan turn on sooner and/or run longer?

Is this only for N/A cars or will it work on forced induction as well?

I am also concerened about my fuel pump not being able to handle much more power. I have heard they are good up to about 650. I think with a good tune and my planned mods I will be way over that. Do you sell aftermarket pumps that can handle more than stock?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Juli,

Would you gain any more HP than a VEC tune? Comparing ideal tune to ideal tune, no. However, there's a little more to it that as the SCT, being able to reprogram all the stock parameters, can do things the VEC can't. If the SCT's had been around six years ago, the VEC2 and 3 would not exists. All future SC kits we make / ship (starting in May) will be with SCT's instead (including the Gen3 kit which I've been working a lot of different angles on lately, as in, I have three different hoods beyond the stock '03 from the car, 4 manifolds and three different compressors as it seems like new products coming available are allowing me to change the fit and design FOR THE BETTER).

Regards,
Sean

Hi Sean...thanx for your reply! So, since we've already got the VECII, and spent mega-bucks for a couple years now getting it tuned, it's probably best we stay with that program. Thank you for the explanation...and I see WHY the SCT would be included with s/c's....so that means you HAVE the GenIII s/c available, but we'd need a different hood, is that what you mean? THX again!!! ~juli

Yes, we have the skip shift function turned off in all the tunes we create.

Yes, we set the fans to come on at a lower temperature. We lower both the low and high speed activation points by 12 degrees (stock low activates at 207 and high at 217).

With custom tuning, at the vehicle, forced induction and heads / cam cars with different injectors can be programmed. However, this takes some time at the dyno and is done specifically for that car (unless someone builds a second car / engine that's identical). Before pulling the trigger on an SCT for a forced induction or heads / cam car, find out if anyone in your area has the SCT software to tune it. You can buy a single user version, allowing you to do everything you / your tuner to do everything. The software is available from SCT and is "about" $1350.

This group buy should be considered for engines with "standard" bolt ons, up to adding cylinder heads. Because camshafts change vacuum, we should consider those to require the cutom tuning I spoke about in the paragrah above.

Regarding fuel pumps, you're correct that stock Gen2 pumps with a voltage booster can support around 650 RWHP. Adding a water /methanol injection system can gain you enough to support up to 710 RWHP. We've built some custom fuel pump setups for Vipers in the shop making 900 RWHP, but as far as a "kit" goes, no, we don't have anything. I think David Weaver at American Racing Tech in Texas has a twin Walboro pump setup available.

Yes on the hood. The '08 or the Vipair '08 style are what we're fitting it under. I just couldn't get it under the stock '03-06 hood.
I'm trying to get a few kits on some cars now for a controlled test group. Need to run on more than just mine before releasing. I'm keeping quiet until then. Should have kept my mouth shut a couple years ago as I didn't count on some rather long business and personal delays / time killers.

SCT informs me that end user adjustability on the device will come with time and we'll have that available as a free upgrade. This will allow you to change the timing and fuel within a sepcifice range from the tunes we provide. Other features may apply also.

Also when SCT finishes up the software the DC Xcal 2 will be a full blown high speed data logger.

I hear ya!!! Wish you could test on OUR car, but we're too far away from ya! Good Luck with further testing...you needn't have kept quiet, but I understand with the issues you were facing~~no prob!!! ~juli
