Just an interesting question that I do not think has been posed yet for the upcoming GEN V. Many Viper owners being purists and a clear split between the GEN II and GEN III crowd, should the GEN V Viper come with side exit exhaust or rear exit exhaust?

Side. Less weight, less heat.

rear exhaust advantage is only that the SOUND is behind you and not next to your ear ...

I figured from the side and agree. Just curious if that has been conveyed to Chrysler?

Side exhaust is a defining characteristic for the Viper.

I do like the look of side exhaust on any car, but wonder if the rear exhaust sound better running side by side with side exh one[ stock systems ] . I question this because in the high performance boating world [ own a boat with twins and rear exhausts], single engined boats with side exhausts sound terrible. Here's a short clip of my 99 GTS with stock exhaust running through the tunnel. I'd like to find a similar video with side exhaust Viper for comparison.

Rear, GTS type exhaust, 3 inches of course:
Will sound better than side exit..... Won't damage our hearing any more..... Will likely allow us to run at Laguna Seca and other tracks with noise restrictions. It's time for a change.

We tried it on the side, but my wife likes it best in the rear.

+1
Particularly if you have modified exhaust, it's too loud right next to your left ear.

The looks of car should be modeled after the GenII for the next go around and with that being said exit from the rear and then go back to the side for a GenVI. just to mix things up a bit.

I realize everyone has a diff take on this with diff motivations. The DD or casual older driver wants a quiet ride for crusing around. While the dragracer or trackrat dosnt give a F about excessive sound and only cares about performance&wieght.
And then there is someone like me who drives everywhere at all hours on and off the track. So... How about BOTH ![]() With a butterfly And a switch in the cockpit with a separate tune for each one. One would be the loud side exit with cat&sillmuffler The other would route to rear mufflers that would make for a more comfortable drive for us DD's and also some consideration when pulling into our niehborhoods or driving though residential areas at night. The only added wieght would be the butterfly valve. And the system would be designed so you could remove the rear part of the system if you wanted to yank it off for trackdays, or Permanently. I know an argument is that it would look stupid having both tips showing, but i have a solution to that as well. The Rear tips would be black and blended into the shape of the black rear diffuser What do yall think? ![]() Last edited by Dom426h; 02-06-2010 at 08:59 AM. |

Granted I own a rear exit exhaust GTS, but I agree. Viper = Side exhaust.

the side exhaust are just kool..people spend big dollars modifying their rides to have side exhaust that the gen1 rt10's and all srt10's come with stock...
As far as the sound....I have been in and around a lot of vipers with differant exhaust ect..All Vipers sound like crap...I love them but the engine note is horrible.. My 2004 vette even in stock form had a sweeter engine note than any viper I have ever heard.. Go watch one of the videos on you tube at a road course.. Ferrari passes..sex on wheels Lambo passes....sex on wheels porshe passes...sounding great ZR1 passes...Sounding great Any yesar viper passes and suddently the high pitched shrieks you were enjoying are invaded by a low keyed sound of angry carpenter bee's.. Now does the viper sound intimidateing????Oh yea it does....But saying the exhaust should be in the rear or side based on engine sound...Sounds horrible eighter way |

Let me get this straight Twister, you think that a high pitched shriek sounds better than a low keyed sound of angry carpenter bee's..
![]() Sounds to me like you have bad taste. ...or bad eardrums ![]() I love the offbeat sound of the V10. And i find that it intrigues most people. I get anything from: "You got a CAM in there?" to "Is there something wrong with it?" (lol) to "Wow, that thing sounds MEAN!!!" You also have to remember that Vipers can sound very different depending on the exhaust setup: -Complete stock system -Factory Headers / Aftermarket -Stock size pipe / 3" Pipe -Stock Cats / HiFlows / No Cats -Diff mufflers/resonators I've heard some that sound sub-par regardless of side/rear exit. And some that sound Awesome Last edited by Dom426h; 02-08-2010 at 09:38 PM. |
