heat shield on RT cats

Just got my high flow RT cats from Partsrack.

I noticed they have what looks like a heat shield that goes half way around the circumference of the cat. I would think that they should be mounted with the heat shield facing the cockpit. But then I remember reading several posts about heat from the cats damaging the side sills. Perhaps they should be mounted to protect the sills instead? Which way is best? Does it really matter?
