I was reading an article on the various Viper changes Dodge made through out the Years and I noticed that they changed the CAM on the 2000.

Is the CAM on the 2000-2002 a milder CAM ? Does anybody know the actual CAM spec on the 1999 Vs 2000 ?

Thanks !

Jeff

The lift and duration stayed about the same between the years. The difference is that they decreased the valve overlap from 66 to 60 degrees. Opinion seems to be that this was done to decrease the NGR (neutral gear rattle) in the tranny and probably to improve emissions.

2001 cam specs
--------------
Intake Valve Lift 0.542"
Intake Value Duration 297 degrees
Exhaust Valve Lift 0.542"
Exhaust Valve Duration 305 degrees
Valve Overlap 60.0 degrees

I heard that they did it because too many new owners were complaining that their cars idled uneven (lumpy). They should have shot those guys for the benefit of the rest of us who love a lumpy idle.

It was the beginning of the end.

Yep, too many poseurs got into the cars and whined about gear rattle, brake squeal. Try the late model brake pads on track or just hard driving - you'll love it ;-)

Fortunately, the car somehow did not lose too much power; my '01 still pulled over 118 in the 1/4.

Exactly right! Overlap was the major change made in the cam and with no power loss. NGR was the issue and not people complaining.
