As Viper owners know, the Dodge Viper is one of the most remarkable vehicles ever produced. Previously, I have enjoyed the timeless styling & the way it turns heads, the feeling of nearly 400 lbs/ft of torque at 1500 rpms, and the way it responds to the slightest steering input.

However, there was always one thing missing in my Viper experience--I'd never had the car on a racetrack. As a former race car builder myself (drag & late model stock cars), I can attest to what many owners have said--the Viper is really a race car that you can drive on the street, rather than a hot passenger car that you can have fun with on the track. This car just WANTS to be uleashed and set free, so I decided it deserved the chance.

I entered into a real on-track event--the Phil Wicks Driving Academy
web page This took place on Saturday, Nov. 15th at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Five of us from the Gateway Chapter were on hand, despite the moist and cold conditions. As a side note, I'd highly recommend this event to anyone--you get enough on-track time (with personalized instruction) to leave your body sore!

As a former late model stock car crew chief and lifelong gearhead, I had a basic understanding of what to do--accelerate at apex & such--but I needed a few pointers from the pros, some track experience, and to educate my butt a little. I decided to enter the "Intermediate" group, and that was a comfortable place for me. My instructor Bernie was just great.

So...in the second driving session, I started to get the hang of it. I started at the front, then caught the slower cars two laps later. I wound up passing all but two cars (adhering to the passing rules) including a pretty stout tube-chassis race car. My buddies in the "Expert" group did really well too. Ray passed two very bad-ass small block powered tube chassis SCCA Camaros and a pretty wicked Beemer. Great going guys!

Bernie told me that my car was capable of going even faster. I knew the car had more in it, but I really wanted to keep it off the walls and out of the infield dirt (barely!). I mentioned to Bernie that I was glad one of those Minis on the track didn't pass me...he laughed and said "had that happened, I was going to take the wheel from you". LOL...everybody wants to protect the reputation of the Viper!

Anyway...the Viper is now happy and feels complete. I highly recommend this activity to anyone who owns one. It was one of the best things I've ever done. One quick question...both Ray & I have found a gritty black residue from the track/tires that won't wash off. What should we use to remove that ****? Thanks...

Bob,
I'm so glad that I came across your post! Thanks for the write up. I want to get my SRT on the track next spring/summer. I need to install my AF rollbar and 6pts over the winter. The website doesn't have the most information, is there anything else a guy needs to know? I have a friend that would love to come. Do you know if the SRT can go out without a rollbar? Looks like about 240 miles from Nixa, I can load up the trailer and zip up the night before and have a great day!!!
Thanks so much for the info.

Great post. That expert guy "Ray" That is not "slow Ray Moore " as I refer to him is it? He gave me a ride around Putnam Park and now he has me looking to upgrade to a ABS equipped GTS Viper. The guy was on the ragged edge in every brake zone!!! Where is the black deposits located, I usually get some on the rear of the vehicle that easily comes off with Simple Green. If it is behind the tires that must be some sort of tar from the pavement I have no clue. Must stand out nice on Rays yellow Viper though.

There weren't many requirements for this event, but should have your own racing helmet (they have only two "loaners"). Check your private messages...I'm sending you the phone number I have for Phil. He's quite an interesting guy and a real gentleman.

Yep, those tube-frame guys with slicks get real uptight when a licensed, inspected, warrantied street car with A/C, on pump gas, blows them in the weeds.

Too bad. :2tu:

Funny you'd mention that...I actually DID have the AC turned on until I noticed...that was after passing all those guys. *wink*

As far as the black grit on the back of the car body, it laughed at the Simple Green, but came right off with the WD-40. Thanks everybody...this is a great place to get the right info & tips!

Ha I laugh at the guy (Hoosier Daddy) who told you to use the Simple stuff, he knows nothing about roadracing :D , WD-40 rocks. Good luck at future track days, try to make a Viperdays event.

I got a tip that I was being dogged and needed to check out the website.

HDaddy, go ahead and get yer ABS, I'm taking away your current advantage by going from the 275 fronts to the 315s.
That should do a good job keeping the grass cut in the apexs, dontya think? See you in April?

Bob made the Viper croud proud. First time on the track and he was rockin and rollin. I'm bringing him to Viperdays next year. Did you hear that Jerri (Bob's wife)?

GTS Dean, your right, it was funny how worked up those SCCA boys got about getting passed (and some lapped) by a street car.

Phil Wicks will be putting several track events together for the coming year in the Midwest. We had eight on track sessions of 20 minutes each in one day for $200. He will doing events at Gateway (St. Louis), Putnam Park (Indianapolis) and Black Hawk (Rockford, Ill) next year.
See Bob's post above for the website.

SoCal, thanks for the tip on the WD40. I've had lots off crap on the car before, but this stuff seems baked on. They did some track work the day before so I think we may have gotten into some new asphalt grit. What do you recommend using to get the WD40 off?

Most, if not all, will require a roll bar in the SRT. Thankfully the Autoform version can be added and removed without destroying the integrity of the factory build, as it comes with its own interior fascia. You might also be interested in a few other track opportunities that are relatively close to Springfield: The Porsche Club, the Audi Club, and the BMW Club all have "driver education" courses for around $180 for a full weekend of driving. They have them at Heartland Park in Topeka and also up at MidAmerica Motorplex near the Iowa/Missouri border (big track with very few walls). Also note that Viper Days has a big event at that same track and it caters to driver training for Viper owners. Very cool!

Oh, and I have it on very, very good authority that there will be a new world-class roadcourse in south/west Kansas City in the near future. Stay tuned!

Hoosier Daddy is a poser. He has beat me every single time we've been on the same track which only proves he can see the pavement and hasn't run into an object solid enough to stop him (with the exception of Texas World at Viper Days finals last year when he tried mudding off track).

Speaking of which, there are a lot of good track events, but when your ready for the ULTIMATE Viper track experience you should consider any Viper Days event. Skip, Courtney, Tracey and the Viper Days gang absolutely ROCK and the instructers they provide are Viper SPECIALISTS!

Glad your enjoying your car. Thats what DC wants for us!

Hahaha, I agree completely, Hoosier Mama is a "Poser" and he was faster then me at the finals at TWS last year, BUT I was right behind him when he went "off" between 4 & 5 whata sight to behold :D

Love ya Alan, but I know about WD-40 :headbang:

I tried taking that corner flat out once that day. How was I supposed to know the car tires would run out of grip before I ran out of talent? That is what I get for trying to regain the 3 seconds I lost following the train Ron was conducting in turns 1-2.

It's not just SCCA, it's also PCA. And even Viper Days. Skip gets a little exercised when the Super Stock and Prepared guys turn times as fast (or faster) than the GT-2 and GT-1 tube-framers.... (It's nice to be a solid member of that club)

Bob,

Cool write up. Glad you finally got that beast out on the track. Sounds like everything was first class. It's a shame it's not this weekend instead for 2 reasons.
1) It's going be sunny and 70 this Saturday.
2) I don't have to work this weekend.
Oh, well. Glad you had a fun time. See you soon!

Ray,
Use the Simple Green to get the WD-40 off! :) Just wash the area with soapy water a few times and the paint will be fine. I use it to get the tar specs off my white stripes.

Darn the luck! I have to do a Holley carb school in Ohio this weekend. It still bothers me that I couldn't make the winery event. I'll stay in touch and we'll find some time to get with you guys again soon.
