driver door latch

I have a 1997 viper and the driver door won't latch intermittently. the dealer wants to replace the entire mechanism for a bundle. Any ideas of troubleshooting this?

Most likely it is the wiring harness that has a broken wire. This is common
and is easily corrected...

The wire breaks in the rubber hose between the door and the body...
