Modifying Borla 3\" Exhaust - Eliminate 1500 RPM Drone

Looking for some feedback on any similar mods.

My Viper is a 2001 GTS with the Mopar 3" exhaust made by Borla and stock cats.

I get the wicked 1500 RPM drone which I really dislike when cruising. I like to drive with the A/C on and windows up. When the windows are down the drone is bearable, but I really want to eliminate/reduce it. I was leaning toward replacing it with the Corsa exhaust system and reached out to a local muffler specialists who seams to be pretty viper knowledgeable.

He recommended instead of upgrading to the corsa to modify my existing borla system to save about a grand or more. Although he was not sure of the exact brand or size(He was going to get the correct measurements) of the replacement muffler, he said to install a single stainless oval muffler with dual inlets and outlets where the original muffler is installed.

He was thinking dynomax or maxflow.

Do you think this will have the desired effect or would you recommend changing over to corsa and selling the borla setup before I chop it?

Thanks

Re: Modifying Borla 3

I have some dynomax mufflers if you want to make a deal!

I love my Borla! I don't notice any drone at though. But I don't hang out at 1500rpm that often! :p

Re: Modifying Borla 3

I'm interested in the same thing. I've got a Borla mufflers only in the sills system waiting to go on my 2002. I've just started considering having the mufflers in the rear so I can free up space in the sills to do other things. I notice there is like zero space above the OE rear muffler. It looks like might be hard to fit an off the shelf oval dual in/dual out muffler with 3" cores under the back. I'll have to look at it harder, but I think space is limited. I see Borla offers the new rear mufflers from their 4 muffler system, but I wonder if they provide adequate silencing if used alone ..

Re: Modifying Borla 3

I've been web-hunting and I see that MAGNAFLOW makes a 3" dual inlet/dual outlet aluminized muffler (ss not available) that has an 18" body, 22" overall length, with 5.75" ctr-ctr spacing between the pipes. That seems a perfect match for my 3" Borla catback at least. Though the 22" length might be a tad long, but I think if the two Borla pipes that come close together and have the hanger on them (just ahead of where the muffler would go) were shortened a bit, and the 2" long exit tubes from the Magnaflow muffler had most of their length removed (which might be necessary for adding chrome or ss tips anyway) it would squeeze into the space allowed nicely. I have to do some more measuring... the body of the Magnaflow muffler is 5"tall x 8' wide I believe so it'd fit into the recess back there okay..

Re: Modified Borla 3\" Vs. New Corsa

Bump,

Just looking for some feedback. To achieve no drone would you bother modifying the borla or going with an all new Corsa cat-back?

Took Jon at Partsrack's recommendation and went with Corsa. He says all the "B" systems drone.

Looking again it seems the body length is 22" and overall length is 28" :( Probably too long (magnaflow part # 12599)

Re: Modified Borla 3

The new borla exhaust has extra pair of mufflers in the back to reduce this drone. YOu may be able to order this piece from them

Re: Modifying Borla 3\" Exhaust - Eliminate 1500 RPM Drone

Why would anyone want to give up that great Borla sound just to avoid a resonance peak at 1500 rpm? The rest of the range is so much better than Corsa or the new Borla, also, from what my vipertech told me, you'd have to cut the old ones off with a sawzall to remove 'em!

Instead, why not treat yourself to a 3.55 rear axle kit? That will put your cruise speeds in fifth and sixth up around 1650 RPM and above. Works for me!

Edit: oops, just read your profile - you already have a 3.55? Strange - I almost never get drone with mine. Maybe try a 3.73? :p :2tu:

Re: Modifying Borla 3

IMO do not give up the great Borla sound by changing mufflers or system. Keep the Borla system and modify it by putting in an X Pipe. The X Pipe to has a blending effect in cancelling the exhaust pulses crossing in from both sides. This should eliminate a lot of your drone without giving up Borla sound at WOT. Jon B at Parts Rack can help solve your problem by the solution I described above or another way. I have the X Pipe in my Random Tech system almost zero drone.

Re: Modifying Borla 3

I asked Denny at mufflex(www.mufflex.com) the following with regard to some of the feedback I have received in this thread.

1)Will the x-pipe alone substantially reduce the drone on a Borla?
2)Is the back half of the new Borla(Two additional mufflers) available to add on to an existing Borla cat-back?
3)What specific muffler are you thinking about using?

This is Denny's response. He is the person I am speaking with at a Performance Muffler shop in NJ called Mufflex

"The System we are working on as a mail order product is just that ,a rear muffler bypass/ X pipe system .As far as your car is concerned I do not think a X pipe alone will do the job but the muffler I hope to use has a X designed into it (I hope it will just drop in,if not I already have a plan "B"). I have contacted Borla on other situations like this and got a stern NO when asked if components are available separately. If our setup works well we may offer it to the Borla customers as a retrofit "touring" option that can be slipped in and out as needed. If you want to forward this response to the message board feel free to do so!"

I'll let you know how this works. I scheduled to have Denny modify my Borla exhaust 1st week of September.

Re: Modifying Borla 3

I used two Spiral drag mufflers from moroso with 3" in and out. I have the borla xr1 (recommended by Sean Roe) in the side sill, and put the Moroso's just by the rear differential where my TNT has a straight run. These moroso's are a hard welded spiral inside, no packing. take out harshness. I put heat shielding around the moroso's since they run so close to the diff.

They removed the drone I had with a straight 3" system. I have TNT but wound up modifying it as I get older. Now it "can" be loud, but the raspy aspect is pretty much gone. Drone is way down.

Thanks Jim, tell Joel to drive with us. We definitely will eliminate his drone problem at our highway speeds. His new problem to worry about is getting pulled over with us and possibly wind noise.

Re: Modifying Borla 3

V10MAFIA,

At some point I'll be hooking up with the LI guys. Looking forward to it. Jim and I drove a rental Viper in 1995 and got the ich. After one ride in Jim's yellow beast last year I was quickly on the Internet tracking down a Blue(It has to be Blue!) GTS and saying so long to my 4th vette.

It took a few weeks to find a low miles 2001 Blue GTS within driving distance from my house and the rest is history.
