Ode to Viper Part 5
Spring – 1999

DaimlerChrysler made big news
So let me give you a retiree’s view.
You all know the base chronology
They get our volume; we get their technology!
But at Le Mans, on the 24th lap,
The Mercedes engines all took a crap!
While the Vipers swept the GTS class
Totally waxing the Porsche’s….hindquarters.
Viper’s V-10 pushrod mill
Made others seem to be standing still.
What else is new I haven’t mentioned yet?
Any hot new cars a Viper threat?
Well, if you’ve got 200 thou to waste,
The new Bugatti may suit your taste.
And if you rev the engine to 10 grand,
And have a really fast transmission hand,
You might just match the Viper’s thrust
If, prior to that, the V-12 doesn’t bust.
The new Corvette looks like gentle fun
For pleasant drives in the summer sun.
But for winning those race track starting poles,
The V-8 engine’s missing two big holes!
Porsche’s Boxster is a much-praised hit,
Compared to Viper, it’s a piece of…average German engineering.
Ferrari-now they cause beating hearts.
But they’ve got too many engine parts.
“It’s beautiful,” their owners exult,
But where the hell is the end result?
“That lovely sound,” the owners observe,
While the Viper’s gone around the curve.
“How primitive,” the Italians joke,
While choking on the Viper’s smoke.
So, what else is new? What else is great?
Do any leave Viper at the starting gate?
Can anyone match the Viper’s hustle?
500 foot/pounds of American muscle?
If there any car you’d take
In favor of our beloved Snake?
The answer is “no,” we need to say no more.
All other cars are a crashing bore.
It may be lewd, and it may be crude,
And doing burnouts may be rude.
And the enviro-folks may fret and pout,
But Fun is what Viper is all about!
With Al Gore’s crowd, it ain’t a hit.
Do any of us give a ….darn?
So to our Snake we gladly sing,
“We love you more than anything!”
