Battery Temperature Sensor and Optima Battery

Can anyone explain what the purpose of this sensor is and why I need to modify it if I put an Optima battery in my SRT.

Some good info.

Briefly, the sensor needs to contact the battery and won't do that on a round cell type battery as easily as it will a flat sided one. I am running an Optima yellow top. I modded the sensor as described in the archives and no issues.
