If a GTS goes 4.91 at 150.5 in the 1/8 mile, is there a formula to figure out what it would do in the quarter?

Wow!!! That is an awesome time. If that car is set up for running an 1/8 of a mile, (as in huge gears) it may not be as great of a 1/4 mile runner. I have heard some people say that a close guess is 1/8 mile time plus 60% of the same time. That would mean that this is a sub 8 second car!

No man can calculate that with accuracy.

If the GTS remained at exactly that speed (220 feet per second) then it would be a 7.91. (660 feet of track remaining.

I'd guess there remains some level of acceleration at the 1/8 mile so something less than 7.91?

1/8 * 2 = 1/4

So multiply everything by 2.

4.91 * 2 = 9.82
150.5 * 2 = 311

So there you have it, 9.82 @ 311mph!!

:D

I don't think so....the car is going to cover the last 1/8th of a mile a lot faster than it did the first 1/8th, right?

Assuming perfectly linear acceleration, the mean speed of the first 1/8th mile would be 150.5/2=75.25 mph. The mean speed of the last 1/8th mile would be ((301-150.5)/2)+150.5=225.75 mph.

And is that some special Georgia math that lets 150.5 * 2 = 311? ;)

Underground ran the numbers with an auto IRS while testing at an 1/8 mile track.

The general rule of thumb is to take your 1/8 mile ET and multiply it by 1.5 to get your 1/4 mile time. Most cars will put on about 30 mph in the 2nd 1/8 mile, but when you start talking about some really high HP cars, that number can get into the mid 30's to low 40's.
