Went to the track yesterday. Car is a 1998 GTS with approx 575 hp at motor, has some motor work done, have not figured out all that it has yet , but here is some info - exhaust, smooth tubes, T&D 1.7 rockers, throttle bodies, lightweight flywheel, 3.73 gears. Best I could do is 12.23 @ 117mph. Are my gears hurting my time? What gears would be better? Stock? Thanks, Ron.

No I only had to go to 4th gear. I have Kuhmo V700 tires and they are hooking up. I have an AEM computer that may need some more tweaking. Ron.

ANACONDA666,

There is something strange going on with that kind of power and 60' times. A 98 should easily run 11's with that much power, mods, and decent weather. My 96 only made 415rwhp with Kumho's and 3.73's and would run 11.6-11.7 all day long. Your 60' doesn't really seem to be bad but it should improve with practice. I think you should get the power checked on the dyno. Gen. 2 with that kind of power and mods should be in the 11's with no problem but to answer your question, the gears are NOT hurting you unless you need to get into 5th. Good luck!

Here are a couple of my slips. Somewhat apples to oranges but as you can see, your fine in the 2nd 1/8 mile. The first 1/8 miles is where you seem slow.

R/T .033
60' 1.999
330 5.260
1/8 7.896
MPH 94.55
1000 10.183
1/4 12.075
MPH 117.96

R/T -.124
60' 1.950
330 5.195
1/8 7.818
MPH 95.19
1000 10.101
1/4 11.903
MPH 118.43

I agree with above, your probably overestimating your power by about 60 - 75 hp. My guess is about 430 rwhp max. Gears are OK at your power level, the flywheel and the throttle bodies are probably hurting you. I think for the future you'd be better off with less gear or a bigger tire if you plan to make more power. Additionally, 12.23 is a great time for a viper and your mile per hour is good as well.

Car was on a dyno last month. 435 hp at the rear wheels with bad valve springs. Had valve float at 5100 rpm so the guy setting up my AEM computer could only tune to that rpm. I since have had the springs replaced - can rev up to red line now but have not had the car tuned again. He figured I was losing around 50 hp at the top end because of the springs and lowered rpm range. Maybe 575 is a little over estimated but I know I should still be in the 11's. Thanks, Ron.

Bone stock on stock pilots i have seen excellent drivers pull 11.6-11.7 at 119 mph in Gen2s .With Drag radials on a stock car that equates to approx 11.3s.

I think it's practice practice practice. I am still working on it myself. My best time so far is 11.91 with a 1.75 60' time . I wonder if the gears are holding me back with 3.73 I am at the top of 4th through the trap. Thinking 3. 55 any thoughts???? Thanks

I hate to be a hardass, but while 1.75 is a GREAT 60'......,,, 2.15 is a bit sleepy.
The lighter flywheel helps minimize spin, but I believe you will benefit from 3:55 for sure..... Assuming you are not at some altitude or hot temps, I also believe your throttle bodies are robbing you of some low-end torque IF they are larger than 66mm.....

I've done the same time in a stock 98 RT/10 with stock gears (3.03). The 60 foot time is ok, actually better than I ever did. Seems the car is falling flat in the higher gears. Are you shifting too soon?

I just pulled some old time slips that I had run with my GTS. It had 3.73 gears and 480rwhp.
60' 1.730
330 4.888
1/8 [email protected]
1000 9.765
1/4 11.63
122.51mph
My slow est time that day was 12.1@119
I remember hitting the rev limiter in 4th after going thru the traps. Any viper with over 500rwhp will not benefit from 3.73 in the 1/4 at/near sea level. The cars hp is dropping off near redline, and you are past the torque range and the car is no longer pulling. 3.55 would be better at this point.

My '97 GTS dynoed 436 rwhp and ran 11.7x's at 120mph. Only mods were resonator and muffler delete, K&N's, smooth tubes, and 3.45 gears. It ran 117-118 mph bone stock.

Your mph seems off. What is the altitude there?

Evan Smith drove my "stock" Shelby GTS Viper that had 438rwhp w/3.73 gears on a hot day in NJ and ran a 11.7x, beating my best run by 3/10's. I couldn't get it out of the 12's. He said it had another 1/10 in it, but didn't want to chanch it. I was along way from home. It just goes to show what a "little bit" of practice can do.

First time on the track with 6 year old tires, 3.73, granny shifting, spinning at the line, with a passenger :D, cooler in trunk, GIANT rear wing cranked up, etc was 12.6 @113.

For HP, I have no clue. See my sig.

I would say you should be running a little quicker.

Wow, bringing back an old post. Hey Jon, my 60' was 1.885 the "sleepy" one at 2.158 was my brother in his Corvette!
As far as I can tell the elevation is between 500-1000'at the track. Ron.
Ps- Jon, the new Corsa exhaust will help!

Jon so your saying that the BBK 67mm TB is better than the X-Metal? I realize that I may be losing a bit at the start but do you think the X-Metal would be better at the top end? It's seems so difficult to get dialed in correctly or just find the right combination. I do agree with you on the gear issue running 3.73 is a bit to steep of a gear with redline at the trap in 4th. It's depressing as I read some of the times people write in here and compare them to mine. Stock runs 11.6 with runflats??? Makes me wonder how it's done. Or if it really is. I have been improving my times as I learn more. I am also thinking about some better half shafts.

I've seen Evan Smith drive, he's pretty amazing at getting the most out of the car. Anyone know what his secret is? What RPM does he launch at? Does he slip the clutch or just pop it? Does he shift at red line or sooner?

I think Jon is referring to bigger TB's on GenII's robbing low end power. There was a good discussion on this here: http://forums.viperclub.org/performance-modifications/616720-70mm-throttle-bodies-bad.html

Look at the DA's and 60' time. Can't compare time slips with someone that is running a negative DA and you are at 1,000 ft. Most of the fastest cars are running in NJ or MD where they are below sea level.

Every tenth you cut off your 60' is 2 tenths off the big end. Practice, practice, practice....

I TOTALLY agree with you 300%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rolaugh::2tu:
That's what "I" am saying... People compare time slips as if they were done at the same location and same time. Every dragstrips are VERY VERY VERY different and should NOT be compared proportionally. It's a good way to compare the two cars IF at the SAME location and SAME time, but if these two conditions are NOT met, then the data is pretty much USELESS. :crazy2:
