Default Drag Racing School - Report

I attended a drag racing school on 11/29 and 11/30. The purpose of the class was to allow me to qualify for an NHRA license allowing an E.T as low as 7.5 seconds. I had never previously driven on a drag strip. ( But of course, I have indulged in "spirited driving episodes" for decades.) I have also never driven a vehicle faster than my Viper.

I ( no one else was in the car) did each pass in a Supergas door car weighing 2300 pounds with 770 NA HP. The car had a line lock and a transbrake - both of which I had to learn how to use. It also had difficult visisbility because of the huge center hoodscoop. I did two 200 foot runs. One 600 foot run. One 1000 foot run and three quarter mile runs.

The first run was a bit overwhelming and very intimidating. But I figured that with proper class room lectures and more time in the seat, my learning curve would do its job. Each run was digitally filmed; played back; and critiqued in a detailed and very helpful manner by the instructor. He also lectured extensively on how to clear one's thoughts; recognize and neutralize negative emotions so that a state of calm could be induced to maximize your driving; and certain physiological and neurological issues that are important to maximizing your drag racing skills and their use.

It was an exceptional two days of learning. So by now you may be asking yourself: "So how did you do already?"

Here are the stats for the three quarter mile runs:

    1. 9.244 at 146.81 MPH.
    2. 9.283 at 147.02 MPH.
    3. 9.225 at 147.05 MPH.

By the last run I was feeling very comfortable with the car. I think that I can still do better with more practice.

I qualified for the license. I had no idea how big a difference in feel there was between say a 10.8 second vehicle and a 9.2 second vehicle. It's BIG!!

I wish more people realized the difference in going 12.50 to 10.80 is not the same as going from 10.80 to 9.10. Yes, it is 1.7 seconds, but a totally different sensation. Good job on going to the school, more people should do it. It's money well spent.

What kind of 60' times were you pulling in that thing. That realy gives you an indication of how hard you are being thrown back in your seat.

Out of the seven runs, the best was 1.3 seconds. The worst was 1.369. On the best quarter mile run, it was 1.318.

I've taken that twice because I'm a slow learner. Here was my first report many cars and years ago.

I agree 100%, but how do you even describe what the NHRA top fuel guys must feel?? I'd love to be able to get into some type of amusement park ride that could replicate that experience and sensation. Any car with the speed that has the ability to detach your retina when the chute comes out takes a lot of balls to do.

From my limited runs on the strip (about 15 passes), drag racing takes so much more skill than bench racers would ever imagine.

I'm going to look up the school at Pomona, that would be a kick to do.

    Cheers,
    George

I think the top, Top Fuel people are mutants. The car is doing 100 MPH after .7 second. It is incredible to me that not only do they keep their calm and presence of mind but that they actually steer the cars. Anyone who thinks that this is an easy sport is clueless. The G forces knock the crap out of you and the concentration and focus required to drive well, after a number of runs, is mentally exhausting.

Imagine the joys of bracket racing at these speeds. Where you're not looking at the track, but looking over to see your competitor. Having to let off the gas, hit the brakes and other things. Lots of **** going on and very little time to adjust

I never responded to this back in 2010, but when I qualified to get my Top Dragster license in 2011, I found out the truth of this. Part of the training allows you to have a completely different sense of time while in the dragster. When I did 207.43 MPH in 6.793 seconds in the Top Dragster, it actually seemed like I had plenty of time. For months after that run, when I drove my regular cars in a spirited manner, it felt like I was stuck inside a slow motion reality. It has never completely worn off. The positive side of it is that it is easy to maintain the calm and precision needed to drive well.
