This is the daughter of two parents in the military that are currently overseas. Story here:
My hero is Alexandria my daughter. She is 16 and a Junior in HS. Alex was born MAY 13 1995 weighing only 1 lb 9 oz and has Cerebral Palsy due to her premature birth. She is truly a miracle and a joy. She is resilient. She is strong with the best personality of any person I know.
My husband and I are currently deployed to Afghanistan. He is a DUSTOFF pilot and I am a Flight medic in the Army. Alex is home with Grandma. Making A-B honor roll, taking college entry exams, planning for prom and choosing classes for Senior year.
The vehicle that she has now is 9 years old, has a broken ramp that is not automatic anymore and the latest... the gauges have stopped working. Grandma is using the GPS as a speedometer and has already gotten one ticket. Sorry Mom.
Last year Alex wanted to try to take drivers education like all teens her age. We went thru the process of evaluation only to be denied due to Alex's startle reflex. There are medications that help but at the time we did not pursue that avenue. This past Christmas while home for R&R leave Alex asked if we could try the medications. I told her when I get home. Like all maturing teens she wants to drive. She needs a dependable accessible vehicle to do that.
Military insurance helps with a lot of things unfortunately an accessible vehicle is not one of them. The only item for a power wheelchair they will fund is an external lift. As Alex does not transfer by herself this does not provide the independence Alex wants or deserves.
She has endured my 18 yr military career with 3 combat tours. She is a true HERO!! Is it a coincidence that voting ends on her birthday? What a present that would be!!!
