Default Are my gears hurting me?

Went to the track yesterday. Car is a 1998 GTS with approx 575 hp at motor, has some motor work done, have not figured out all that it has yet , but here is some info - exhaust, smooth tubes, T&D 1.7 rockers, throttle bodies, lightweight flywheel, 3.73 gears. Best I could do is 12.23 @ 117mph. Are my gears hurting my time? What gears would be better? Stock? Thanks, Ron.

No I only had to go to 4th gear. I have Kuhmo V700 tires and they are hooking up. I have an AEM computer that may need some more tweaking. Ron.

ANACONDA666,

There is something strange going on with that kind of power and 60' times. A 98 should easily run 11's with that much power, mods, and decent weather. My 96 only made 415rwhp with Kumho's and 3.73's and would run 11.6-11.7 all day long. Your 60' doesn't really seem to be bad but it should improve with practice. I think you should get the power checked on the dyno. Gen. 2 with that kind of power and mods should be in the 11's with no problem but to answer your question, the gears are NOT hurting you unless you need to get into 5th. Good luck!

Keith

Here are a couple of my slips. Somewhat apples to oranges but as you can see, your fine in the 2nd 1/8 mile. The first 1/8 miles is where you seem slow.

R/T .033
60' 1.999
330 5.260
1/8 7.896
MPH 94.55
1000 10.183
1/4 12.075
MPH 117.96

R/T -.124
60' 1.950
330 5.195
1/8 7.818
MPH 95.19
1000 10.101
1/4 11.903

Stop the guessing and put the car on a dyno!

I agree with above, your probably overestimating your power by about 60 - 75 hp. My guess is about 430 rwhp max. Gears are OK at your power level, the flywheel and the throttle bodies are probably hurting you. I think for the future you'd be better off with less gear or a bigger tire if you plan to make more power. Additionally, 12.23 is a great time for a viper and your mile per hour is good as well.

Car was on a dyno last month. 435 hp at the rear wheels with bad valve springs. Had valve float at 5100 rpm so the guy setting up my AEM computer could only tune to that rpm. I since have had the springs replaced - can rev up to red line now but have not had the car tuned again. He figured I was losing around 50 hp at the top end because of the springs and lowered rpm range. Maybe 575 is a little over estimated but I know I should still be in the 11's. Thanks, Ron.

Bone stock on stock pilots i have seen excellent drivers pull 11.6-11.7 at 119 mph in Gen2s .With Drag radials on a stock car that equates to approx 11.3s.
